Here are some tips on how to prepare for a positive respite care experience:
Pay a visit.
Tour our communities.
Ask questions.
Learn about the availability of medical care, daily activities, meal plan, and registration process.
Schedule in advance.
Weekends and holidays book up quickly.
Organize health information including:
- history and physical
- medications
- food or drug allergies
- tuberculosis testing
- advance directives.
Collaborate on care with staff.
Share emotional state, ability to understand and communicate, and assistant needed in walking, eating, toileting and bathing.
Help staff get to know your loved one.
Tell them about personality, likes and dislikes, family and friends, pets, hobbies, favorite foods, taste in music, routines, sleep habits, personal and work history, military service and achievements.
Arrange emergency contacts in case you can’t be reached.
Start small.
Schedule a one-night trial stay to see how your loved one responds.
Make a packing list.
Essential items include labeled clothing and underwear, personal toiletries, medications, slippers or grip socks and an overnight bag.
