Respite Care: A gift to Caregivers and their loved ones

While ’tis the season to be merry, the holidays are also time for stress-especially for caregivers.

Add parties, shopping, and baking to daily duties of caring for someone who is elderly or disabled, and the to-do list can be overwhelming.

Respite care can help.

It gives you time to focus on holiday preparations or just take a break, and have peace of mind knowing your loved one is being cared for.

Short-term respite stays are offered by all Platinum Communities.

Advantages are that guests have the opportunity to socialize during their stay.

Caregivers run out of energy and need a break.

Why wait until you’re totally exhausted or at your wits’ end?

“It’s been a lifesaver.  Sometimes, I run out of energy and need a break.  Or a vacation to visit family takes me out of town,” caregiver Jon said.

Here are some tips on how to prepare for a positive respite care experience:

Pay a visit.

Tour our communities.

Ask questions.

Learn about the availability of medical care, daily activities, meal plan, and registration process.

Schedule in advance.

Weekends and holidays book up quickly.

Organize health information including:

  • history and physical
  • medications
  • food or drug allergies
  • tuberculosis testing
  • advance directives.

Collaborate on care with staff.

Share emotional state, ability to understand and communicate, and assistant needed in walking, eating, toileting and bathing.

Help staff get to know your loved one.

Tell them about personality, likes and dislikes, family and friends, pets, hobbies, favorite foods, taste in music, routines, sleep habits, personal and work history, military service and achievements.

Arrange emergency contacts in case you can’t be reached.

Start small.

Schedule a one-night trial stay to see how your loved one responds.

Make a packing list.

Essential items include labeled clothing and underwear, personal toiletries, medications, slippers or grip socks and an overnight bag.
